The freedom to write and sell books is fundamental to a democracy, so in these censorious times how best can we disagree without silencing? To talk it out robustly are Audition author Katie Kitamura, who’s spoken out against Trump’s attacks on language; novelist Yiyun Li, who’s written about self-censorship in China and online; and bookseller Mahmoud Muna, whose Educational Bookshop in Jerusalem was recently raided by the Israeli Army, accused of ‘disrupting order’ by selling books and educational material.
The Edinburgh International Book Festival is a world-leading festival of words, literature and ideas.
Every August they celebrate the written word, bringing together over 600 events with the most exciting writers and thinkers on the planet to ignite imaginations, foster human connection and challenge the status quo.
