About the Book

Hizbullah (‘Party of God’) is a major political and military actor in Lebanon and the wider Middle East. Sheikh Naim Qassem, Secretary-General of the movement, presents an insider’s account of the organisation’s development from its founding to the present day.

Established in response to Israel’s invasion of Lebanon in 1982, Hizbullah evolved from an armed movement into a political party that participates in Lebanon’s parliamentary system. This work sets out the group’s mandate and ideology, offering readers a rare primary source for understanding one of the region’s most influential and controversial political actors.

This paperback edition includes an introduction covering the 2006 war with Israel and the events of spring 2008 in Beirut.
