The Society for the Study of the Sudans (UK) is delighted to host the launch of the latest novel by the SSSUK President, Leila Aboulela. This is “a spellbinding new novel about an embattled young woman in the years leading up to the British conquest of Sudan”, comments her publisher, Saqi. It is a story about love, slavery, the anti-colonial struggle, politico-religious fervour, and so much more. Leila, who lives and writes in Scotland, was the first winner of the Caine Prize for African Writing. She will be in conversation with Fergus Nicoll, former BBC World Service journalist and historian of the pre-colonial period, when the Mahdi ruled Sudan. In the chair is Lutz Oette, Professor of International Human Rights Law at SOAS, who has worked on Sudan for two decades.
